WHAT a whopper — at just nine years of age, young Sarah Barratt of Whitchurch has landed the largest trout ever caught at Tavistock Trout Fishery's children's lake.
Sarah caught the 17lb 3oz monster fish with a spinning rod baited with sweetcorn.
Trout Fishery owner Abigail Underhill said: 'It's the biggest fish we've ever had from the children's lake — the record before that was about 14lb.
'The children were absolutely delighted!'
Luckily mum Karen was on hand to help Sarah land the splendid fish, although she admitted help from a fellow fisherman was invaluable.
She said: 'It was the first time we had ever been fishing, it was during the Easter holidays.
'They were so excited about it, I was totally amazed because I didn't think they would catch anything.
'They caught two smaller ones first and I said they could have just one more go!'
Karen said the fish is now in cutlets in her freezer, although the two smaller ones have already been eaten.
'The funniest thing was that we'd cycled there and we had to cycle back with this huge fish!
'I think the best bit was seeing the other fishermen when we walked past with it — they'd never seen anything like it!'
