IN beautiful weather, 51 teams of four competed in the Junior and Senior Relays around the Meadows last Thursday, with 78 children, parents and grandparents tackling one lap of the course in the Fun Run which started proceedings. The evening was organised by Tavistock AC and the race organiser Keith Bowles is grateful to Abbey Garden Machinery for its sponsorship of the event, and to all the members who helped. It is hoped more than £200 has been raised for the Lions carnival charities, the NSPCC and RNLI. All local athletic clubs sent teams, plus a contingent from Exmouth Harriers, with some of the best runners in Devon and Cornwall taking part. In the senior relay it was gratifying to see Tavistock AC retain the senior men?s trophy - they not only did this but broke the course record, which had stood for eight years, with a new figure of 20 minutes 58 seconds for the 4.4 miles. Adam Tofield and Chris Champion were the first two runners in the team and provided an excellent platform for Nick Pearson and Adam Holland who produced superb runs of 5 minutes 8 seconds each to beat second placed Tamar Trotters by 15 seconds, with Exmouth Harriers third. In 4th place, and winning the Vets (Over 40) Trophy was the Tavistock AC A Team, in a creditable 22 minutes 3 seconds. This consisted of Charlie Lloyd, Tony Symons, Steve Groombridge and Richard Drage, who pipped last year?s winner South West Road Runners by 4 seconds in an exciting finish. A scratch team of Sharon Dawe, Nadia, Naomi Carpenter and Carrie Lawson won the Ladies? Trophy in 27 mins. 41 seconds in 23rd, with East Cornwall Harriers A team of Jenny Nash, Sharon Dawe, Lorraine Perryman and Revis Crowle retaining the Ladies? Vet Trophy in 25 minutes 11 seconds and 16th out of the 37 teams overall. In the section for local sports clubs, only Tavistock AFC entered male teams, so they came 1st, 2nd and 3rd through their Lambs 1, 2 and 3 teams respectively. Lambs 1, consisting of Will Stringer, John Morris, James Steer and Andy Meeds were an excellent 10th overall in 24 minutes 12 seconds, beating many athletic club teams. Lambs 2, Paul Cowlins, Nigel Pugh, Sean Cann and Mark Conday were close behind in 24.57 and in 13th, with Lambs 3, Mike Arcott, Lee Ireland, Shane Krac and Dave Hallett in 26.41 and 20th. Again, entries from ladies in local sports clubs was disappointing, but the hockey club again flew the flag with Robynne Honey, Laura Stapleton, Chloe Bassett and Fiona Dunn winning in 28 minutes 58 seconds and in 27th place. Capita Business Services were the only local organisation to enter teams, so the team of Tony Shearer, David Byworth, Jeagson Palmer and Gary Arundel won the Men?s Trophy in 25 minutes 8 seconds, and in an excellent 14th place, and Fiona Arundel, Helen Bond, Marie Therese Bovey and Nicole Heryet the Ladies? Trophy in 33 minutes 44 seconds in 36th. Bere Alston Trekkers (BATs) were represented for the first time by Samantha Grylls, Sue Catto, Rebecca Harwood and Patsy Boon and produced a time of 34.49. Thirteen teams took part in the junior relay, and this was a triumph for Tavistock AC U14 boys? team of Matt McNamara, Jake Rendle, Nick Champion and Tom Lawson. They produced an amazing time of 24 minutes 41, almost two minutes in front of the next team and which would have placed them 13th in the senior relay. Second team home was the club?s U16 boys? team of Sam Murray, Richard Stephens, Luke Aspen and Euan McCall, in a good time of 26 minutes 32. Other winners were U16 girls: East Cornwall Harriers: Christina Pillar, Rhiannon Player, Shannon Murchison and Ashley Sims, 10th. in 31.25; U14 girls: Tavistock AC Tornados: Laura Aspen, Sally Grice, Catriona Smith and Kirsty Smith 8th in 29.52; U12 girls: St. Edward?s Primary School : Laura Moreno-Chamorro, Jemma Eason, Jenna Burton, Jasmine Gould, 14th in 37.20; U12 boys : East Cornwall Harriers : Tom Coles, Jacob England, Cadan Crowle and Steven Sims, a good 5th in 28.24. The Fun Run was won by Ashley Wills in 6 minutes 12 seconds.
