Cup Final
Venue: Home Park
Tavistock 1
Vospers Oak Villa 0
THE Lambs added another chapter to their history by winning the cup for the first time against Devon League side Vospers.
The victory came after a nervous and tentative start. There were chances for both sides in the opening stages but it was Tavistock's Andy Meeds who was in action first.
Vospers' Roger Bonaparte slipped past defender Craig Hodge after 16 minutes to set up Sean Cornish whose curling shot seemed destined for the top corner. But Meeds arched across his goal to palm the ball away and Lee Johnson, following up, could only send it into the side-netting from an acute angle. He was in action again two minutes later to prevent Richard Asson from opening the scoring.
This was the platform for the Lambs to attack and James Cole's 25-yard flyer had keeper Andy Barnes tipping his shot over the bar. The Lambs came more into the game as the first half drew to a close and went ahead on 35 minutes.
Steve Daymond's persistence near the corner flag saw the Lambs awarded a free kick and from it came the all-important goal. Cole's hard driven low cross was touched on by John Hajiyanni and it hit defender Darren Francis Lang on the leg to fly into the net.
Meeds was in action early in the second half as Bonaparte and Cornish combined to let in Darren Wills and the keeper held onto a low drive. Vospers went through a good spell of attacking during the middle part of the second half and thought they had equalised but the ball had crossed the byline before being headed back across goal for it to end up in the net.
Equally, the Lambs thought they had increased their lead a little later when Steve Brownlow bundled the ball over the line, but a linesman's flag had gone up earlier to stifle players' and spectators' celebrations.
Not a classic final by any means, but in the end it was the right result that counted for the Lambs and keeper Meeds fully deserved his man of the match award, followed closely by defender Darren Babb.
