YOUR anonymous correspondent's comments (Letters, February 15) regarding the primary cause of road crashes were refreshingly well observed compared to the all too common 'knee jerk' reaction to intervene with yet further structures to save the careless driver the trouble of having to observe warning signs and road conditions.

The attitude whereby any obstruction to greater speed must be removed is exemplified in Cllr Cartwright's comment (Okehampton Times, February 8) that travelling south from Glasgow . . .'Merrymeet roundabout at Whiddon Down is the first roundabout you come to after 470 miles of dual carriageway'.

Even allowing for the possibility that the above quote was out of context, why on earth is it a problem, after 470 miles of almost constant speed on a monotonous roadway, to have to apply the brakes or change gear — disturbing to one's cat-nap or mobile telephone conversation perhaps?

The regional transport group's efforts would be far better directed to solving the problems associated with heavy goods vehicles on the B3219 between North Tawton and Whiddon Down.
