EMPHATICALLY it is not in the remit of the West Devon planning department to choose between Sainsbury and Lidl. Their remit is to decide if either or both proposed sites are suitable for a retail supermarket or not. Both supermarket chains may have their merits, but that is not for the planners, after all if either is built what is to stop them then selling the premises on to another chain? Will another one or two supermarkets affect the centre of Tavistock? A walk through the centre last weekend showed there to be eleven empty retail premises and a further four in use as charity shops. Thus, I fear the damage has already been done. Tavistock already has three supermarket chains serving a population of about 20,000. Do we really need a fourth and/or fifth? If so, the preferred site must be the current eyesore of the old MacDonalds/furniture warehouse site, and not a site earmarked for business as opposed to retail use. While on the subject of town centres, when oh when will someone address the subject of the Bank Square area as a whole — how about pedestrianisation? Chris Dicker 14 Watts Road Tavistock
