DR?Ann Pulsford writes on The Wharf lecture ‘A Birding Adventure in Guyana’ by Ian Gasper.
Although August 1 was a wet and miserable afternoon 60 people attended Ian Gasper’s lunchtime lecture at The Wharf. His title was ‘Adventure in Guayana’, a country he had visited for three weeks in 2014.
This included 12 days in the interior where inhabitants are scarce and electricity was in very short supply.
Travel was usually in a battered old 4x4, occasionally light aircraft, involved river crossings, winching and precarious bridges.
He showed photographs of some of the treacherous routes on his adventure.
However, the main focus of the visit was to photograph the fantastic range of birds, including scarlet ibis, falcons and eagles.
He also photographed a giant anteater and sloth and visited the Kaiteur Falls, which has the longest single drop waterfall in the world.
Ian’s enthusiasm for the wildlife and country transported the audience.
