I AM amazed that the borough council in the new dog control orders is trying to compel dog owners to pick up poos on the moor which many of us have already opposed. Such a motion could lead to farmers having to pick up sheep, cattle and pony droppings which is completely mad. Your correspondent Louise Street in last week's 'Letters' seemed determined to follow the new bylaw and appeared to instruct a holiday maker in what to do and when he did pick up the dog's mess he fairly quickly threw the black bag away causing a greater hazard! As she mentioned in her letter the walker 'mumbled it would be the last time he would holiday in the area'. So another tourist lost and many more in the future if this insane rule is actually observed. Louise Street goes on to more crazy ideas in suggesting signs be put up over the moor about picking up poos which I am sure would be abhorrent to the Dartmoor National Park authority and everyone else. Quite apart from tourists, local dog walkers are not going to pick up on the moors (I have spoken to many) and I have been walking dogs on the moors for over 30 years and this is just bureaucratic nonsense. In conclusion, I will say as I wrote in a previous letter to the Times that I am very much in favour of owners picking up dog waste in the town and Meadows and all built up areas and also of stiffer fines for offenders but please be realistic and leave the moorland areas alone.
