TAVISTOCK Tennis Club struggled a little in the league last week winning only one match in both senior and junior competitions, but some individual matches were close as depicted by the scores.

It was unfortunate that the men's D team had to forfeit three sets in the match against Torpoint B due to an injury.

Results — Seniors: Men's A team lost 4-6 at home against Mannamead A in a keenly contested match which hinged on two crucial tiebreaks. John Reeder and Andrew Lyle-Carter v their 1st pair 6-7, 6-2-6-7; v 2nd pair 6-4, 7-6. Simon Thomas and Bernard Mowle v their 1st pair, 4-6, 5-7; v 2nd pair 6-2, 3-6, 3-6.

B team lost 4-5 at home to St Budeaux A in another close match. Phil Harbottle and Ray Hinton v their 1st pair 7-5, 6-2, v 2nd pair 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. Alan Bruce and Tony Finnigan v their 1st pair 3-6, 2-6; v 2nd pair 5-7, 4-6.

C team lost 2-6 away against St Mellion A. Jonathan Stephens and Martin Hix v their 1st pair 1-6, 5-7; v 2nd pair 7-5, 6-3. Rick Reed and David Isaac v their 1st pair 2-6, 2-6; v 2nd pair 4-6, 3-6.

D team lost 3-8 at home against Torpoint B. Mike Jefferies and John Warne v their 1st pair; 6-4, 3-6, 2-4 (due to a torn calf muscle to John, Tavistock had to concede this set and both sets in their 2nd match). Bill Sparks and Steve Fletcher v their 1st pair, 4-6, 6-3, 5-7; v 2nd pair 7-6, 3-6, 3-6.

Ladies' A team lost 0-8 away against Mannamead A, a strong team, where there were two tie-breaks. Tric Locker and Penny Deakin v their 1st pair, 3-6, 4-6; v 2nd pair 1-6, 6-7. Di Kersey and Annie Jefferies v their 1st pair 1-6, 2-6; v 2nd pair 6-7. 2-6.

B team at home to Yelverton C. Match postponed due to rain.

C team won 5-4 away against Liskeard, their first win of the season and a highlight of the week.

Annie Bruce and Sue Whiteman v their 1st pair: 6-4, 6-3; v 2nd pair 3-6, 6-3, 3-6. Sara Whyman and Masayo Ward (playing in her first match for the club) v their 1st pair 4-6, 2-6; v 2nd pair 7-5, 6-3.

Juniors: the A and B teams who are both in division 1, came up against each other.

The A team won 7-2 as would be expected, but the B team played well. A team players first: Nick Simpson v Josh Cowan d'Arcy 6-0. Tom Bruce and Will Simpson v Alistair Falconer and Olly Cowan d'Arcy, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6. Tom v Alistair 6-2, 6-4. Nick and Will Simpson v Josh and Olly (note, two pairs of brothers playing each other) 6-2, 6-4. Tavistock A now head division 1.

C team lost 3-6 at home against Plymstock. Russell Rice v their first player 6-4, 7-5. Stephen Rubardon and Daniel Clark — both playing in their first match for the club — v their 1st pair 0-6, 2-6. Stephen v their 2nd player, 1-2 sets. Russell and Daniel v their 2nd pair, 3-6, 2-6.

D team lost 1-8 away against Torpoint A who fielded a strong side. Sara Whyman v their 1st player; 6-7, 3-6. James Martin and Anna Maunder v their 2nd pair 0-6, 3-6. James v their 2nd player 6-7, 1-6. Sara and Anna v their 2nd pair 6-3, 3-6, 5-7.
