Rowing out on a peaceful lake in West Devon is a fabulous feeling and a friendly local club is calling out for more people to join them.

Based at Roadford Lake activity centre and run by captain Nigel Jones, this small rowing club with ‘fine boats’ — not gigs – is suitable for all levels of experience.

Nigel said: “Whether someone is a beginner or an experienced rower, you’ll be more than welcome to join us at Roadford Lake Rowing Club. We’re a small, friendly and inclusive rowing club — and it’s such a rewarding sport in this beautiful location.”

The welcoming club is affiliated by British Rowing and the West of England Amateur Rowing Association with “single sculls, double sculls and some fours”.

Generally meeting on Sundays at Roadford Lake, but with other “flexible” options for those wishing to row at other days or times, the rowing club has “a license to row 24/7”said Nigel.

Nigel explained: “I do an assessment on a rowers ability (at first) and we operate a buddy system if rowers are heading out on days other than Sundays. It’s such a fabulous feeling when you’re in the boat and everything is going smoothly.

“Roadford Lake is such a beautiful location, it’s a nature reserve – and we share the water with paddleboarders and kayakers. There’s nothing better than the solitude of being out on the water. Rowing looks easy and fluid, but there’s a lot going on, it’s quite a technique and so rewarding.”
