Okehampton U11s 14

Barnstaple U11s 14

AS has often been the case in the past, Okehampton started slowly and some disappointing tackling saw them soon trailed by 14 points. They were unable to win a steady supply of ball against a large Barum pack and were hesitant behind the scrum in the face of a useful pair of half-backs.

Given a stern talking to at the interval by their coach they were a side transformed in the second half. Oke now won the majority of possession and the tigerish Simon Moody and Jack Chapman were impressing in the loose. The strike runners Ollie Arden, Greg Daniel and Leon Horn were all making inroads into the visitors defence and it came as no surprise when both Horn and Daniel went over for scores that were converted by Jack Ogbourne to tie the game.

A BETTER start to the match this week saw Okehampton settle straight into the game with good defending across the whole team.

The first scrum of the match was easily won by Okehampton and scrum-half Kai made headway passing out through the backs to Daniel for him to score. Barnstaple ran again and again up the wing but found Immy each time solidly tackling to stop their tries.

Oke's superior scrumaging enabled Gareth to break away and pass to Maddy Arden who has rejoined the team this season. She made good ground but Barnstaple's defence was too sound. They slipped through to score but Oke answered straight back by winning yet another scrum with great hooking from Brad, and the ball went out to this week's captain Nathan to score. Will, again, had an good game with great support from George and Alex. This week's player of the match went to Daichi .

In the second game Barnstaple won 15-10.

Tavistock U10s 25

Crediton U10s 25

IN a hard fought game, Tavistock achieved a fair draw with Crediton. Tries from Lochlan Fulton, Jack Smyly and Jason Blake were converted well and the whole team worked hard for the ball and put in some tremedous tackles. Great runs by Morgan Turnock and a welcome return from injury for Tom Pearson raised the team morale and fantastic tackling from Ciam Benny stopped Crediton sneaking away with the game.

THE second game was very different with Tavistock having a 10-0 half time lead from darting runs by Jack and Lochlan but with support work from newcomer Jacob Staig and Zac Clifford Flower. Three quick tries in the second half left Tavistock reeling and this sparked them into action with Theo Jenkins hanging onto the ball and in the last play a try from Archie Allen. Player of the match was Jacob Staig.

Okehampton U9s 65

THE second game of the season saw Okehampton put a spirited Barnstable side to the sword, scoring 13 tries to Barnstaple's second.

Oke started in dominant form, with a much improved display in the rucks and driving mauls. Great all round performances from Sonny Luxton, Ethan Wilds, Harry Laing-Taylor, Jake Laing-Taylor, and Saul Holiday, all kept pressure on Barnstable attacks.

James Close, Liam Daintree, Daniel Wonnacott, George Cox and Daniel Tomkins all made good breaks and set up second phase ball well when in attack. Charlie Glanville and Matthew Denning both put in some hard try scoring tackles. Will Cunningham at scrum half, flipping out some well times passes.

The second performance of the day came from the ever improving David Smith, who worked hard and scrummaged well, and Cole Pengelly who had a commanding performance scoring five tries and setting a great example to his team-mates in and around the ruck area.

The Barnstable coaches were gracious in defeat and complimented the Okehampton players on their great all round team work performance.

Okehampton U8s 25

Okehampton Under 8s travelled to Barnstaple last Sunday. The team played a 12-a-side match to help accommodate Barnstaple who had an excess of players turn out for the game. This meant that all the Okes played the full four quarters of a game which Barnstaple won in the end 11 tries to five. Jay Jenkins scored Oke's first try and also his defence tactics were second to none, particularly when he chased an opposition player the length of the pitch and tagged him just short of the try line. Also scoring for Oke was Oliver Johns, who scored three tries and Edward Luke, who showed some flair when he scored a fine try. Oke improved during the game and won the final quarter of play.

Tavistock U8s 5 tries

Newton Abbot U8s 7 tries

A new season saw Tavistock U8s have a great first  game with Newton Abbot.

Despite monsoon conditions before and after the game, the new team with four new faces and three playing their first ever competitive match, did themselves proud. In the first half tagging and support play was excellent as Ted and Jacob scored good tries. At half time the score was 3 -2 to Newton Abbott.

In the second half, Callum, Joe, William and Jack ran their socks off and fed Isaac, Liam and Tom to score tries, all from long range. Tom's dummy and outside break showed the promise he has and Isaac showed glimpses of talent as he gets used to his new teammates. Despite the loss this was a very good start to the season. New players, both boys and girls are very welcome, especially those in year two. Please contact James Mills on 01822 616 862, no experience is necessary!
