AN important collection of artworks by some of the most well-regarded Devon artists will be going up for auction next week.
The 20 paintings have come from the collection of the late Martin Beaver, whose family originated from Whitchurch and collected the pictures over many years.
Dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, the paintings are by some of the most well-regarded Devon artists, including William Payne, Francis Towne, Nicholas Matthew Condy and John Nixon.
One of the highlights will be an oil painting from Nicholas Matthew Condy which dates back to 1834 and depicts a scene of shipping on the Tamar. A watercolour by Francis Towne of Fingle Bridge, Drewsteignton, will also be on sale. Having been somewhat forgotten about until recent years, Francis Towne is currently in demand with his work now featuring in major global collections, including the Tate, the Louvre, the Rijksmuseum and the British Museum.
The auction is being held in Cambridge by auctioneers Cheffins on June 13 and 14.
