THE importance of local orchards will be explained in an apple pruning day at Morwellham Quay on Saturday, February 2. Participants will be guided by professional tree specialist Charles Staniland on using tools safely and where and when to prune the many varieties of apple trees. There will also be time to ask questions relating to people's own orchards. Stephen Russell from the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty team said: 'Apart from the richness of their wildlife, traditional orchards can make an economically valuable contribution to the locally distinctive character and quality of Devon and Cornwall's landscape. 'At one time every farm and large garden would have had its own orchard of mixed fruit trees for domestic and other uses, including folklore and festivals.' Warm waterproof clothing and suitable footwear is recommended plus pruning tools. Participants are asked to bring a packed lunch. To book a place contact Stephen Russell on 01579 351083.
