I WISH to applaud the idea put forward by Mr Souttar on your front page (February 19).

If Bodmin can show such enterprise, Tavistock with its 1,000 years of history can surely do likewise.

Grants from Europe and the Heritage should be sought, and Mr Souttar's suggestions followed.

Having recently seen the council's suggestion for an old folk's rest room, I feel the premises would be totally inadequate for that purpose, and a different central alternative should be found as soon as possible.

As regards plans for the re-siting of the police station, the existing building in its central position with cells and a history of its own should remain. If a new station was to be built, Pixon Lane with a fast outlet for vehicles is worth considering.

A rail link to Bere Alston, depending on a 'sweetener' for 700 new homes, is a red herring. The new out of town station at Ivybridge has not been a great success.

A much more useful rail link would be restoring the old line to Exeter with links to London.

Many of the bridges on this line, which started from the old Tavistock North Station, are still intact, and although the route would need some adjustment, this line would be a useful alternative to the often interrupted existing West of England line through Dawlish and Starcross.
