YOU fiends. It took me a while, but I finally worked out the truth behind your front page story (April 1) on the discovery of truffles in West Devon.
It all fell into place when I was reading a magazine article about the theft of the 1966 World Cup in England and its subsequent discovery by a dog called Pickles — the same name as the dog that supposedly found the truffles.
I re-read your story and wondered what the Latin name of the truffle, Aprilis Baceolus, could mean. I looked it up on a Latin-English dictionary website and unearthed the translation: April Fool.
Curses on you and chef Peter Gorton!
Please do not publish my name and address, I am too embarrassed to admit I was had!
