YELVERTON Hurricanes U11s had a 'festival week' in winning their last three league games to take the Palladium West Devon League title and also, in a separate match, qualified for the West Devon Cup Final.
On Tuesday Yelverton faced their closest rivals , the previously unbeaten Plymouth Peverell, at Kelly College. The Hurricanes put in one of their best batting performances of the season on a slow damp pitch to post a challenging target of 300 with top scorers being Ben Grove (24) and Jacob David-Ward (19).
An early wicket and tight opening bowling spell by Dan Farnham put Plymouth on the back foot from the start from which they never recovered. Subsequent wickets by Ben Dunlop and Pierce Widdecombe helped restrict Plymouth to 245 giving the Hurricanes a 55 run victory.
Victory over Cornwood Oaks by 212 runs on Thursday left Yelverton going into their last game on Friday against Whitchurch with their 100 per cent record still intact. Great bowling from Whitchurch's George Andrews (14-3) helped contain The Hurricanes to 296 in their 16 overs. However , the Yelverton bowlers responded to the challenge and , on a slow and low wicket , reduced Whitchurch to 111 with Wilf Hadow (12-4) being the pick of the Yelverton bowlers. The Hurricanes completed their season with 13 consecutive wins and were presented with the League Trophy at the end of the match.
Earlier in the week, Yelverton beat Cornwood by 46 runs in the Semi-Final of the Cup competition with significant performers being batsmen Ben Dunlop (25), Jacob David-Ward (23) and bowlers Ben Grove (8-3) and Adam Talbott (10-2). Yelverton face Plympton in the cup final at Yelverton on September 12.
