THE two U11s Yelverton Cricket Club teams, The Hurricanes and The Mosquitoes, played each other in their Palladium West Devon League fixture at Langton Park on Friday after being presented with their new shirts from sponsors Devonport Royal Dockyard Employee Trust.
The Hurricanes batted first and their first two pairs — Dan Farnham, Luke Julyan, Wilf Hadow and George White - batted sensibly and took the score after 10 overs to 250 whilst only losing two wickets. Ben Grove and Ralph Lopes then accelerated the rate and put on a further 36 runs before the final pair, Ben Dunlop and Pierce Widdecombe, amassed 55 to take the Hurricanes to 341. Widdecombe was top scorer with 38 and the pick of the Mosquito bowlers were Alex Smith, with 1-12 off his 3 overs, and Max Timmins who also took a wicket.
In reply the Mosquito openers Adam Talbott and Will Ingram kept the Hurricanes opening attack out and moved the score on to 212 after 5 overs. A good bowling spell by Devon player Ben Dunlop contained the second pair - Max Timmins and Lewi Stokes - before a solid partnership by Jonathan Hawley and Ben Marks added a further 19 runs. The final pair, James Degg and Alex Smith, then took the attack to the Hurricane bowlers and added a further 31 in the final 5 overs . The Mosquitoes finished with a creditable 246 with their best batsmen being Jonathan Hawley who was 11 not out.
The pick of the Hurricane bowlers was Ben Dunlop with three wickets for seven runs ; Grove, Widdecombe and Farnham were the other wicket takers.
The Yelverton Hurricanes still top the West Devon League with 10 wins out of 10 whilst the Mosquitoes are also well placed in the top half of the league table.
