WHO are you supporting in the Euro 2008 football championships? Well there's no doubt which side one family from Mary Tavy will be on — Holland. The football mad Reed family in Moor View are flying the orange flag while their team competes in the competition being played in Austria and Switzerland. And the Dutchmen got off to a flying start on Monday when they trounced world champions Italy 3-0. The Holland connection comes from grandmother Ans Reed, who is Dutch. Ans told the Times: 'We love our football, and especially Holland. But Holland can drive you mad. Individually they are great footballers, who are superb, but as a team they just can't seem play together. They are like a lot of prima donnas— it's so frustrating.' The flying Dutchmen are in a tough group with France, Italy and Romania. Cheering on with Ans will be her son, William, the former captain of Devon County Golf team, and her grandson, Tom, who has just finished Tavistock College and plays football for Plymouth side Elm United. 'In Holland the fans go absolutely crazy — they even paint their cars orange. I'm really looking forward to Holland playing Italy, but it's also a little disappointing that England didn't qualify.' Ans came to live in the village in the early 1970s, after living in East Africa for 17 years. Her late husband, Bill, who died in 1999, was a manager at Devon Consuls Mine. 'I absolutely love it in Mary Tavy, I wouldn't want to leave. I feel safe here and our neighbours are so friendly.' Ans has found out where the Dutch football team are staying and says she will be sending a copy of this story and the picture in the Times to them at their hotel in Lausanne, Switzerland. 'It's all good fun.' she said, and it might give them a bit of a boost that someone in England is cheering them on.' Ans and William Reed are pictured outside their Mary Tavy home.
