I READ with interest that rented accommodation may soon be available in Tavistock Town centre for key workers who do not qualify for affordable rents.
Sadly and once again, the majority of working people in this town miss out. Buying or renting in the private sector is a non-goer for most and unless you are in priority need, ie have social problems, are pregnant or homeless, you just don?t get a chance for affordable housing either!
Most local people are being forced to share with other single individuals that they may not be happy living with or young people have to stay at home with parents a lot longer. This gives neither parents nor offspring their independence and most parents would not make their children homeless.
I wonder what most of us would define as a ?key worker??
Surely an electrician or a plumber are key workers and what about the rest of us who work in offices, shops and restaurants in the town? For whatever reason we have not had the opportunity to become a teacher, doctor, dentist etc but we have lived and worked here for many years and are a key part of this town.
