A PLAN to build six new houses at Walkhampton has been put off, pending further discussions on the likelihood of flooding.
The application to Dartmoor National Park Authority was to build the houses on land next to the Methodist Church. But the authority wants more time to consider issues such as flooding and what type of development would be suitable.
The site is an area of pasture bordered by houses and accessed by the road opposite the village hall. There have been nine letters of objection, mainly arguing that it would damage the character of the village and increase traffic to an unacceptable extent. Burrator Parish Council said the proposal was inappropriate and if there was to be housing there it should be locally affordable.
The county education director requested that the developers make a contribution of £1,133 per house to the educational fund, as he said the development was likely to increase the shortfall of places at the primary school as well as adding to demand for places at Tavistock College.
l Phoenix Mill, Horrabridge, is not to be transformed into a pair of new houses., The Dartmoor National Park Authority has turned down an application by Alan Speare Limited to knock down the aluminium glazing workshop on the site and build two detached houses.
The authority said that housing on the site was unacceptable because it would be a loss of land for local employment. The parish council supported this view, adding that more large houses were not welcomed locally.
The company said the development would enable it to expand its workforce of 19 by five people, but it admitted that only three of the current 19 lived in the village.
