ANDY Houghton from Tavistock Athletic Club and his son Ben completed the Blencathra Fell run in the Lake District.
The route is from Mungrisdale to the Summit of Blencathra (868Metres) and back via a number of subsidiary peaks. The eight mile circuit, had some exhilarating downhill stretches. Normally the views are superb with Skidaw and Helvellyn close by and the Scafell Group in the distance but unfortunately the summit was in the mist with a strong cold wind blowing across the ridges.
Andy said: 'Being near the back of the field on the Summit approach, I was a little anxious about having to use map and compass to find the check point. However just as I was losing eye contact with other competitors and getting ready to start navigating, the check point loomed out of the mist. After that is was straight forward.'
Andy finished in 1hr 48mins, some 23 mins behind Ben.
It was their first mountain fell race and the pair are keen to do another while accepting that risks are a little higher than for normal road running.
