AN HISTORIC hotel in Milton Abbot has been included in a ?hot list? of the top 60 hotels in the world by a prestigious travel magazine. The Hotel Endsleigh is number 22 on the list, produced by Conde Nast Traveller, and is one of only four UK hotels to feature. The ornate Grade I Listed country house on the banks of the River Tamar was built in 1812 for Georgina, Duchess of Bedford. Now owned by Olga Polizzi, it opened as a hotel last August. Hotel manager Alex Polizzi, the daughter of the owner, said it was ?incredibly exciting? that they were one of only four UK hotels highlighted. ?It?s a compliment to my mother?s design and a testament to the atmosphere we have managed to create here.? The Conde Nast write-up describes the building, which is set in 108 acres of landscaped gardens and forest on the edge of Dartmoor, as having been ?immaculately restored to its Regency glory, replete with oak floors and panelled walls. ?Every room is a treasure trove of interesting antiques ? big porcelain urns, marble busts, oriental armoires ? and contemporary fabrics in classic Georgian colour?. It describes the ?traditional English food?, including Devon beef and sticky toffee pudding, the ?open fireplaces and expansive lawns? and ?the salmon-and-trout-filled river?. The prime room to book, it says, is room eight, ?a huge double once slept in by Queen Victoria, with wonderful, listed, hand-painted wallpaper?. But the review stresses: ?despite its grandeur, this is the sort of place where you can kick off your shoes and pad about in socks, in true house-party spirit.?
