THREE goals in 15 minutes from Town leading scorer Matt Shorter finally ended the stiff resistance of Gunnislake as Ian Southcott?s mix ?n match Callington side retained the Bedford Cup at Langsford Park, Tavistock on Sunday night.

This local derby started at a frenetic pace with both forward lines causing the other?s defence problems. With Callington?s mix of first and third team players, beginning to dominate, it was a surprise to most when Gunnislake broke the deadlock on 35 minutes.

Ex Town player Stuart Wakenshaw received the ball some 20 yards out and fired a wonderful shot that left Wayne Wormald with no chance in the Callington goal as it soared into the net.

Callington had the ideal riposte within two minutes when Matt Shorter created the chance.

When his shot was parried, Mike Ruark was there to sidefoot the ball home.

The second period was only five minutes old when a break saw Shorter run clear and he side-footed the ball past the Gunnislake keeper and into the net to the delight of the large Callington contigent in the crowd.

Soon afterwards another offside breaking move saw him chip the keeper for Town?s third before completing his hat-trick with 20 minutes to go.

Young forward Pete Floyd added a fifth with a glancing back header on 80 minutes to complete the scoring and it was captain Matt Hawke who lifted the Bedford Cup for Callington, with Shorter receiving the man of the match award from tournament organiser Jim Wakem.
