IT'S back, it's bigger and it promises to be better than ever . . . The stage is set for Okehampton to rock as the 2008 Battle of the Bands prepares to explode onto the scene next week. Okehampton's Battle of the Bands, now in its fifth year, sees bands from across the region compete in heats to make it to the grand final in Simmons Park on Saturday, August 9. The competition is a unique opportunity for aspiring bands, of any musical persuasion, to gain experience of performing live to an audience — last year's final attracted more than 3,000 people. Wednesday, July 16 will see the first heat of this year's battle in Okehampton's Charter Hall. Doors open at 6pm with the first band starting at 6.30pm prompt. Entrance is free and there will be a full bar as well as hot food available. Each heat will see eight bands perform, with the top two going through to the final. The judges will award marks on originality, technical skill, presentation, audience reaction and 'star quality'. Wednesday's heat will see a eclectic mix of bands strutting their stuff, with some from as far away as Axminister and Salcombe. Organiser Richard Appleby said: 'I'm pleased to say it's all coming to a head. I've had loads of support from all the local charities as more and more people are aware of Battle of the Bands. 'We had such a great reception last year with 3,000 people at Simmons Park — we've got a lot to live up to. 'I'm not revealing the guest but it is a very special band who will appeal to all ages. 'We have had incredibly generous support from Aardvark Studios, Rock Hen's Coop and Wren Music Trust, who are all offering major prizes.' In a move akin to the Sport Relief event, which took place in Simmons Park earlier this year, Richard is now looking to hear from any charities or community groups in the area who would like to have a free stall to advertise their work at this year's final. He said: 'This year, because of all the support from local charities and the way the event has grown, we want more charities to be involved to help raise their profile and awareness of what they're doing.' Also new to this year there will be a photo competition sponsored by Richard's Time Machine. Members of the public are being invited to take photos that capture the excitement of the event at each heat. The best photographs will be awarded prizes. The winners of each heat will be announced on the night with each heat set to conclude at 11pm. Fans of all the bands, or live music, are being urged to be involved in each heat as much as possible. Richard added: 'Bands have been working hard throughout the year in preparation. They've been working for months and that's why I want as much support as possible from the audience. 'When I was younger I had very limited opportunities to perform live music in Devon which is why I am doing this now.' The other two heats will be held on Thursday, July 24 and Thursday, July 31.
