OKEHAMPTON College, which celebrated its best ever set of GCSE results this year, has been selected to host the Devon exam results annual media conference on Monday.

The conference, which will be attended by Devon County Council's director of education Phil Murray and executive councillor for schools John Hart, is expected to announce a good news story for exam results across the county.

Press officer for the local education authority David Hutchings said each year the conference was held at a different school in the county which was performing well.

'Okehampton College has had a hat-trick of successes this year with another improvement in GCSE results, obtaining technology college status and the completion of the new technology block,' he said.

This year, 58.3% of pupils achieved five or more A*- C grades, an increase of seven per cent on last year and 12% from two years ago.

In addition to this 'AS' level results were up by two per cent and 'A' levels up by three per cent.

Principal of Okehampton College Chris Powell said he was really pleased to host the conference because the college had much to celebrate.

'A lot of hard work has been put in by a lot of people particularly into improvement plans focussing on exam performance,' he said.

'We have looked very carefully at things like coursework and revision for exams and these have paid dividends.'

Other changes to the college which the principal feels may have had an effect on achievement include mixed age tutor groups.

Monday's conference at 10am will see the release of a performance table on Devon's schools but the county council is keen to stress that this is not a league table: 'It will be in alphabetical order and there will be 20 different columns highlighting different areas,' added Mr Hutchings.
