HORSE riders in West Devon have welcomed a proposed bridleway extension to link up with Halwill and Cookworthy. Following the recent opening of a new and diverted bridleway from Thorndon to Bowerland, Devon County Council has proposed an extension linking up with Halwill, following campaigning by equestrian group South West Riders. The group says the proposed link up would offer a number of additional opportunities for riding and walking. As well as Cookworthy Forest at one end and leading to Dartmoor at the other, it will safely link up a number of bridleways and riding opportunities for recreational use. The group says the area has suffered chronic access problems since the A3079 became so busy after upgrading, making it dangerous to ride or even walk along. South West Riders chairman Chris Ingram said the bridleway would be of use to the whole community all year round, not just horse riders. ?As well as providing a superb recreational facility this bridleway will provide a major contribution to road safety. ?I am sure that Devon County Council can be relied upon to proceed sensitively and sympathetically to bring this about, taking in to account the concerns of the various landowners along the proposed route, diverting where necessary and ensuring safety is not compromised.? She added: ?I have no doubt this bridleway will be a major asset to this area and, indeed, where it adjoins or is in close proximity to riding and holiday establishments, it will do a great deal to enhance their value and viability.? Devon County Council has opened a consultation period until mid-September for people to comment on the proposal. The group is asking horse riders, cyclists or walkers who support the proposal to write to South West Riders at Wood Park, Boasley, Okehampton.
