AN appeal was this week issued to riders in West Devon, in an effort to make horseback journeys less dangerous.
Cllr Gretta Madigan, chairman of West Devon Community Safety Partnership, is asking riders to let the authorities know of particularly dangerous areas where horses can come into conflict with other road users.
Cllr Madigan, the county council representative for the Yelverton area, said: ?The county would like to identify the most dangerous places for riders and places where something could be done to help.
?We are not talking about enormous schemes, but there may be simple measures that could be taken to make riding safer.?
Cllr Madigan said the community safety partnership has already spoken to some groups in West Devon ? but they would like to hear from individuals as well, to get a clear idea of the location of any danger spots.
?We want to give everybody a chance to have their say,? she said.
Cllr Madigan said she knew many riders had to cross the busy A386 to gain access to bridlepaths and moorland ? there were also problem areas in the north of the borough, she said.
Cllr Madigan said in some cases, simple measures like cutting hedges well back could make a huge difference? but the partnership needed to know the blackspots in the first place.
She said there were ?no promises? that work could be carried out, but in many cases, straightforward remedial work could be all that was required.
Any rider in West Devon who has concerns about safety in particular areas can call Cllr Madigan on 01822 841462.
