OKEHAMPTON Rugby Club president, Ross Campbell addressing members at the annual meeting, opened his report by expressing disappointment at the first XV?s relegation to the Devon 1 league. An indifferent start to the season made catch-up very difficult. Things improved significantly when Brett Luxton began to help with the training and with young players about to move forward toward the first team there are grounds for optimism. The target must be to get back into the Devon/Cornwall League, considered to be the right level for the club at this time. Outstanding individual successes were the selection of Julian White for the British Irish Lions? tour of New Zealand and the offer of professional terms with Exeter for Richard Bolt. The president continued by praising all the ladies of the club, a special group with extremely high standards in all they do. It had been his pleasure to see Roger WIlls elected as a life member in recognition of his services over many years. A severe problem the club has to confront is the over use of the pitches. With so much emphasis on junior rugby and the increased training for them, the grounds are operating under unfair conditions. Club treasurer Toby Daniel in his report made clear the debt owed to the generous sponsors. Costs rise year on year and payments to insurance, main service providers etc keep the finances at full stretch. The season ended with a small credit balance without offering the opportunity to build on reserves. A worrying feature was recent legislation with the Licensing Act, another expensive necessity with no advantage for small private clubs. Chairman Robert Barkwell in his report, supported all that had been said by the president and treasurer. His hopes were that the club would continue to play an important part in people?s lives and for it to be successful. There is a need for more volunteers to help run the club smoothly. The club could be facing exciting times and now is the moment to become part of that - Max Sansom, club secretary, on 01647 440266 is waiting to hear from you.
