Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one East
Okehampton Argyle 1
University of Exeter 1
THIS was a hard fought point for Okehampton and well deserved against a University side placed much higher up the table.
With a strong wind in their favour, the University enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half, but Okehampton defended well and, as the half progressed, began to threaten the students' goal.
There were very few scoring opportunities for either side before the break, but the University came close two minutes before half-time when a well flighted cross was headed against the Argyle bar, and the rebound shot over as the students followed up.
At the start of the second half, the Argyle supporters were hopeful that with the wind now behind Okehampton, the home side would begin to take control of the game. They were not to be disappointed as the Okehampton midfield started to create a whole series of opportunities for Steve Kinsey and Adam Mortimer up front.
Stuart Entwhistle and Colin Marshall began to run the centre of the park and they were ably backed up by Matt Mortimer, Steve Williams and Ben Harris – all of them showing an admirable work rate.
On 57 minutes, Steve Kinsey's through ball released Steve Williams who outpaced the students' defence and blasted the ball home from a narrow angle to give Argyle the lead.
More chances fell Okehampton's way but these were not converted and the University always looked dangerous on the break.
With nine minutes left, the University was awarded a free kick wide on the left and the well taken kick found Joe Woodward completely unmarked in the Argyle box, giving him time to turn and shoot past goalkeeper Harry Geering to level the match.
Okehampton came back again, with defender James Williams, who had had a good game at the back, making several strong runs down the right flank and substitute Chris Wills also looking impressive in the right sided wide position.
Argyle almost snatched the winner with only two minutes left when Matt Mortimer's through ball put Steve Kinsey in the clear, but the striker shot just wide of the post with only the keeper to beat.
