SOUTH West Water's Karl Jones, team manager at England's oldest working power station in Mary Tavy, has been nationally recognised for inspiring the next generation of technicians.
Mr Jones was shortlisted in the Inspirational Technician Award at the National STEMNET Awards 2011 at the House of Lords in London last week for his commitment encouraging young people to take up science and technology subjects.
As an ambassador for STEMNET (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network), the SWW employee volunteers his time to help mould future technicians through activities such as building paper windmills with students and explaining magnetism to a primary school group.
Mr Jones said: 'I am absolutely thrilled to have been shortlisted for this award. Being a technician at Mary Tavy on the edge of Dartmoor is a fascinating and rewarding career and I feel we have a responsibility to pass this knowledge on to students who may not be aware of all the career opportunities available to them.
'I started my career as an electrician. I wanted to follow a hands-on career and enjoyed being an apprentice as I was continually developing and learning new skills. I take great pleasure in helping understand the practical functions of the STEM subjects before learning the complex theories.
'Technician careers allow students with a desire to learn practical skills and passion for their specialism to succeed, regardless of academic barriers.'
The award, launched for the first time this year by STEMNET and the Gatsby Foundation and presented by Lord Sainsbury of Turville and Secretary of State for the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, Vince Cable, celebrates the achievements of individuals who have inspired young people to follow technician career routes.
Last month Mr Jones was crowned Environmental Champion 2011 by Devon Environmental Business Initiative (DEBI) at an awards ceremony at the Met Office, Exeter for his efforts in making the site at Mary Tavy wildlife friendly.
