TAVISTOCK Athletic Club is delighted that their junior head coach, Adam Tofield, has been recognised for his selfless commitment to the club by receiving an award from England Athletics as 'Young Volunteer of the Year for the South West.'
The England Athletics National Awards programme has seen volunteers across the country recognised for their contribution in supporting the development of sport.
Adam was nominated for the award by Keith Reed of Armada Athletics Forum, which represents 14 athletic and running clubs in and around Plymouth, East Cornwall and West Devon.
Keith said: 'Adam has 'shown great commitment to helping Tavistock Athletic Club as a younger coach. He has shown real enthusiasm for working with the juniors and this is evident in their excellent results.
'Adam is also a very good athlete in his own right, and is a fine role model. There is no doubt that he deserves this award for all the hard work and dedication shown to the club and athletics in general".
Adam first got keen on running at the age of 13, whilst a pupil at Tavistock College. Over his remaining school years, he gained as many coaching qualifications as he could, began coaching with the club, and was appointed junior head coach in January.
In May he graduated with a degree in applied sport science and coaching with management. Now, aged 22, Adam plans, organises and delivers coaching sessions for the many junior club members, attends competitions with them and tackles administration issues as well.
He was thrilled to receive this recognition of all his hard work.
He said: 'I would like to accept the award on behalf of all the coaches past and present with the club who have all put a lot of time and effort into the club and for those who inspired me to get involved in coaching. I would also like to thank Keith Reed for nominating me and supporting my development.'
Sheila Houghton for TAC said: 'With all this effort, Adam has helped to shape the future of Tavistock Athletic Club.'
