One of Tavistock's unsung heroes is to be honoured by having a road named after him.

Stuart Cole has been Tavistock's street cleaner for many years and walks the highways and by-ways of the town come rain or shine clearing litter.

A new development of houses adjacent to Wyatts Lane in Tavistock is to feature his name, and the name of the firm developing the land — it will be known as Cole Moore Meadow.

The suggestion that Mr Cole should be honoured in this way came from Tavistock councillor Caroline Keane.

Mrs Keane said: 'I am thrilled a "living hero" has been included in the naming of this project.

'He is somebody that does a job of work everybody appreciates — I just think he is remarkable man.'

Mrs Keane said Mr Cole always has 'a smile and a word for everyone' — something she came to value when suffering from personal problems and depression several years ago.

'In my dark days of despair sometimes Stuart was the only person I spoke to and I owe a great debt to him,' she said.

Mr Cole said it was a great honour to have a street named after him.

'It was very much a surprise — I didn't believe it at the time.

'I will try to fulfil the honour given me, in giving back the town the pride it deserves.

'My family and my name is everything to me, so to have this site named after me is something I never dreamed of,' he said.

The land is owned by Harold Moore and Son (Builders) Ltd and is the latest site to be developed in Tavistock by the company, which was formed in 1947.

Company director Rita Moore was delighted the family name would be remembered in this way.

'I think it's lovely,' she said.

'My father-in-law and husband started the firm in 1949. My father-in-law was a rural district councillor, urban district councillor and borough councillor — he spent most of his life working for the town.'

Mrs Moore said the family firm built Mohuns Park, Westmoor Park and Redmoor Park in Tavistock.

'They've been building in the town for 50 years which is a long time for a business to keep going — they've left their mark in more ways than one,' said Mrs Moore.

West Devon Borough Council spokesman Alison Stoneham confirmed the sign for Cole Moore Meadow is on order — a naming ceremony will be carried out in the near future.
