WORLD-renowned photographer and West Devon resident David Bailey will be receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Plymouth today (Thursday) at Exeter Cathedral. David Bailey will be joining international theatre director Eugenio Barba, who also receives an honorary degree, and successful graduates from a range of courses at the university?s faculty of arts graduation ceremonies. He became a fashion photographer for Vogue magazine in 1960 and subsequently a freelance photographer working for every major publication in the world. David Bailey is perhaps best known for capturing some of the world?s most famous and beautiful people on film. Dean of the university?s faculty of arts Stephen Parissien said: ?Bailey is one the world?s leading photographers and short film directors and was awarded the CBE in recognition of his achievements in 2001.? ?Barba has received, among other awards, the Danish Academy?s Kjeld Abell Award, the Mexican Theatre Critic?s prize, the Pirendello International prize and the University of Copenhagen?s Sonning Prize. ?The University of Plymouth is proud to be able to add its own recognition of the considerable achievements made by these two world-class artists by awarding them honorary degrees.?
