A PROPOSAL for four homes on the site of a former coal yard in Station Road, Okehampton has been refused by West Devon planners.

The layout and landscaping of the scheme by Mr and Mrs R Campbell was felt to be out of character with the area and the design overly dominant in places.

Four letters of objection from local residents were submitted to West Devon Council with concerns about privacy, overlooking and loss of light, density, over dominance and buildings being out of character.

Planning officers, who recommended refusal, said the site joined a conservation area of considerable local distinctiveness and the plan did not reflect some of the key characteristics which would have been appropriate for a new residential development in this area.

It was also considered the design and positioning of Unit 1 would be domineering in the street scene and detrimental to the amenity of neighbouring residents.
