FOUR West Devon residents will be taking part in the mammoth Flora London Marathon this April, to help raise money for a new community project in their village. Lifton residents Kevin Marshall, Jeremy and Emma Durrant and Ann Marie Chater are all running the 26.3 miles to raise money for the proposed Lifton Community Centre. But before they venture onto the track they must take part in the months of hard training in all weathers, like every London Marathon runner. Ann and Kevin started their training in December followed by Emma and Jeremy, who have recently started preparing for the race. Each week the foursome take part in the six days of training, which involves varying lengths. In a week the group will run 40 miles, but when they have reached their peak they will be running 60 miles a week. Kevin said the idea for raising money for the new community centre came after they found out they had all got a place in the marathon. 'We are all from the area and wanted to raise some money for the centre. 'They have the site but they need to raise money to actually build the building and they need several thousands of pounds,' said Kevin. 'It will be hard work but it will be worth it in the end as we will be helping the community. 'We hope that people will give and help to benefit the community.' Tony Phillips, a trustee of the community centre, said the trustees were all 'cock-a-hoop' when they heard about the foursome's fundraising idea. He said: 'So much money is needed and this will give us the publicity and help to raise a considerable amount.' Sponsorship forms are available from Lifton Village Store, Lifton Farm Shop, Lanes Stores at Tinhay and Orchard Electric in Launceston or from the runners themselves. Anyone else who is taking part in the marathon and would like to join the team should contact Kevin at work on 01566 776666.
