THE garden of Lewtrenchard Manor at Lewdown will be open in aid of the RNLI on Sunday, August 3 from 2pm to 5pm.

The Jacobean Lewtrenchard Manor is a house virtually untouched by time. The original building was mentioned in the Domesday Book, but today's impressive dwelling, set in its own shrub filled gardens and surrounded by peaceful parkland, dates from the early 1600s. Over the years it was home to a series of colourful characters.

The gardens and grounds at Lewtrenchard extend over several acres and feature streams and ponds, fountains and statuary, sunken lawns and a profusion of shrubs.

There is also a huge rustic dovecote and a recently restored walled vegetable garden, where the chefs often gather fresh produce for their menus.

The garden is being opened to the public by kind permission of Von Essen Hotels. Admission is £2 for adults and 50p for children, who must be accompanied.

A free booklet giving full details of more than 40 gardens opening in aid of the RNLI in the South West this year is available from 01752 850680.
