THREE high-flying young students from West Devon and East Cornwall took take part in an innovative environmental scholarship scheme based at Heathrow Airport.

Claire Riseley and Robert Shaw from Kelly College in Tavistock and Kee Yan Tse from Callington Community College won three out of the ten places on the World Wildlife Fund scheme, which examines environmental and sustainability issues within the aviation industry.

The students spent five days at the airport, working alongside experts from the scheme's partners, British Airways, BAA Plc, the Aviation Environment Foundation and WWF.

Craig Johnson, head of secondary and vocational education, said: 'The environment and sustainability are strategic business issues for those organisations who wish to succeed in the 21st century.

'This scholarship scheme will help equip young people — the workforce of the future — to tackle environmental and sustainability issues in the workplace and become responsible employees.'

Students who applied for scholarships were given the chance to join an Internet discussion on the issues, research the topics and prepared a 1,000 word outline on the future of aviation, and how environmental, economic and social demands should be balanced within the industry.

The internet-based scholarship scheme was open to A-level, GNVQ and AS level students from all over the country.
