TAVISTOCK Tennis Club embarked on its participation in the 2004 Plymouth and District League programme last week.

Seniors: Men?s A team in division 1 lost 4-6 away against Mannamead A, a strong team, the match hinging on a tie-break. Linden Hardisty/Chris Hill v their 1st pair; 6-2, 6-0: v 2nd pair; 5-7, 6-2, 6-7. Simon Thomas/Simon Prout v their 1st pair; 3-6, 1-6: v 2nd pair 3-6, 7-6, 3-6.

B team in division 2 lost 4-6 away against St Mellion A. Phil Harbottle/Rick Read v their 1st pair; 2-1 sets: v 2nd pair 1-1 sets, bad light stopped play. Damian Heard/Terry Lanchbery v their 1st pair; 6-2, 5-7, 0-6: v 2nd pair; 0-6, 4-6.

E team in division 7 won 5-2 away against East Cornwall B which was a good start for the new E team. Bill Sparks/Josh Brown v their 1st pair; 6-3, 6-3: v 2nd pair 6-4, match not completed due to poor light. John Jackson/Steve Fletcher v their 1st pair; 6-3, 6-4: v 2nd pair; 3-6, 6-7.

Ladies? A team in division 2 drew 4-4 at home against St Budeaux B. Tric Locker/Tori Cunningham v their 1st pair; 0-6, 1-6: v 2nd pair; 6-3, 6-3. Sue Parsons/Annie Jefferies v their 1st pair; 3-6, 4-6: v 2nd pair; 6-3, 7-6(8-6) which was a tight set and crucial to the match overall.

Juniors A team in division lost 24-56 at home to Hill Lane. Peter Bloomfield v their 1st player 1-6, 1-6. George Batt/Jamie Osborne v their 1st pair 0-6, 3-6. George v their 2nd player 5-7, 5-7 a good match. Peter/Jamie v their 2nd pair; 4-6, 5-7.

C team in division 4 won 53-8 at home against Whiteford Rd which was an excellent start to the season for a young team only one of whom had played a league match before. Tom Bury v their 1st player 6-0, 6-0. Charlie Bury/Philip Webb v their 1st pair; 6-1, 6-3. Charlie v their 2nd player 6-0, 6-2. Tom/Philip v their 2nd pair 6-1, 6-1.

Recent friendly matches: Won 6-4 at home against Callington which was played on the basis of mixed D, men?s D and ladies? D. Team: Melody Mason/Chris Hill and Josie Gerhold/John Burgess. Lost 3-5 at home against Okehampton, played mixeds only. Team: Babette/John Jackson and Jane Colegate/Tim Wallis.

There was a good entry for the opening of season tournament with 24 participants. Winners were Sue Whitman and Terry Lanchbery who beat Sue Parsons and Damian Heard in the final.

An enjoyable and well attended pre-season social event playing skittles at the Chip Shop Inn was held in March, organised by Viv Iles.

l Club member Gaynor Pollard with Jenny Kay of Yelverton teamed up well to win the Mannamead Winter League ladies? doubles division B open competition, no mean achievement as there was some strong opposition.
