THIRTY pupils from Buckland Monachorum?s St Andrew?s Primary School recently installed ten nesting boxes in nearby Didham Wood for dormice. As part of an access and learning project, pupils were delighted to help put up the boxes, led by teacher Ros Knight. The children had previously researched the habitat and characteristics of dormice as part of a homework task, bringing in a wealth of information and ideas. Quizzes and games allowed the eight and nine year olds to learn about hibernation, different tree varieties and how dormice enter their nests. The work in Didham Wood also includes a new entrance field gate and creation of a woodland path, which will allow the pupils to make safe, regular, supervised visits. The project was funded by Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty?s Sustainable Development Fund, which is available to encourage community groups, businesses and individuals to work together developing practical and sustainable solutions to the management of their activities. Dormice have been in decline for many years and are just starting to re-establish themselves again in the Devon and Cornwall area.
