VOLUNTEERS are being sought for Tavistock Area Support Services, a support organisation for the over 55?s in the town and the surrounding villages. TASS is recruiting to get more people on the team to help reach out to the over 55s who are suffering from chronic isolation. TASS backs recent research published by Help the Aged which painted a ?bleak picture? of isolation for many older people in Britain, with more than 1.25 million of them always feeling lonely. The research found 29% of pensioners have to rely on family and friends to get out and about, but 200,000 of them are trapped in their homes as they receive no help on a regular basis, with 730,000 elderly people unable to leave their homes more than once a week. TASS delivers a range of services ? breaking the cycle of isolation whether through financial, physical, social or transport, making a difference to their lives. For more information on how to support TASS or others, contact TASS?s general manager Andy Lyle on 01822 616958.
