VICTORIAN volunteers are this week being sought for a West Devon tourist attraction. From gardening and restoring old farm equipment and horse drawn wagons to sewing and mending clothing, Morwellham Quay is appealing for volunteers to put on Victorian costume and help. Anthony Power from Morwellham Quay last week held a special session at Tavistock Library for anyone interested in becoming a volunteer. As well as stepping into costume, volunteers will also assume the identity of a Victorian character. Visitors to Morwellham Quay, which was once a centre for shipping minerals such as tin, can try on Victorian costume, take a train ride down into an old mine and explore the museum watching crafts people at work. Jim Pevalin, alias ?Captain Henry Allport?, has been a volunteer at Morwellham for three years. He said Morwellham was a fascinating place to be ? and a beautiful environment to work in. ?Meeting the visitors and helping them understand Morwellham?s past is always a lot of fun,? he said. Anyone with green fingers is invited to help with two projects. The first is a one-off job requiring a strong back for heavy digging, whilst the other is on-going, helping to look after Morwellham?s herb garden. Specialist help and elbow grease are also required to try to get some of the antique farm machinery working again, whilst nimble fingers are needed to help with the Victorian costumes. In return for their help, volunteers will receive lunch and membership to Morwellham, enabling them to visit whenever they want. For further information contact Geri Laithwaite on 01822 617457.
