TAVISTOCK'S town crier could be making his way to Bermuda next year for an international competition. David Turner and his consort Rosemary Turner recently took part in a series of competitions during which they met Edward Christopher, the town crier for Hamilton in Bermuda. Mr Turner was issued with an official invitation to visit Bermuda for a competition in April 2015, which will also form part of the celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the transition of the capital to its present location. Mr and Mrs Turner have recently approached Tavistock Town Council for financial assistance in attending the event as they will be representing Tavistock on an international stage. 'I would very much like to take this opportunity to represent Tavistock internationally, accompanied by Rosemary,' said Mr Turner. At the town council's finance and general purposes committee meeting on September 2, members discussed providing financial backing to the town crier and his consort. Cllr John Sheldon said: 'The town crier does represent the town and is a character we all know. 'This is not a holiday, it is a town crier contest and I would like to propose that we support this and show he has got our backing.' Tavistock mayor Cllr Harry Smith said: 'A town crier works whenever required and as a gesture the proposal from Cllr Sheldon should be supported.' The committee recommended £300 should be granted to Mr and Mrs Turner toward the cost of the trip. The decision was due to be ratified at the full council meeting on Tuesday, September 9.
