YELVERTON Bowling Club?s knockout competitions have run throughout the season and this year attracted more entrants. On Finals Day eight competitions were decided. The Challenge Trophy was won by Vic Anstis who overcame spirited opposition from John Sloane. The Hamley Shield for pairs picked at random was won by Heather Lock and David Johnson whereas the mixed pairs was won by two long standing club members, Sybil Heathcock and Maurice Hellier. Club captain Joyce Neno, partnering Heather Lock, was successful in winning the Jean Holloway Plate, overcoming Gerry Jones and Phyll Hellier in a close encounter. But Phyll was to have her day in the Wood Trophy beating Theresa Lawson. Theresa, not to be outdone, won the Broughton Cup in the closest of matches, winning the deciding end 21-20 the scores having been level at 20 all after the preceeding end. In the Howells Cup for ladies only, Gwen Dean emerged victorious over Margaret Hartigan after a close match. The competition for the winner of club night, ably organised by John Sloane, and played every Thursday evening during the season, was won by Godfrey Neno. Prior to the last club night Jackie Ball had been in the lead but on the last club evening the results did not run in Jackie?s favour and she was finally fourth. Interestingly, Jackie had considered not playing this year due to poor form, but is delighted with her decision to give it a go one more time.
