The wind blew with strength which enabled the annual match between Kelly College 1st XI and the Headmasters? XI to begin. The Headmasters? XI won the toss and elected to bat which proved a poor decision as the ball both began to swing and move off the pitch with great consistency. The Kelly College opening bowlers, Robert Thomas and George Hall, both exploited the conditions to make the Headmasters? XI struggle for runs. After a short while wickets began to tumble, starting with Kelly College headmaster, Mark Steed, going for 5 runs, bowled by Thomas. The big scalp for the college was the ex-professional Somerset player, Nick Folland, who was caught behind by Richard Goldsby-West off the bowling of headboy, Freddy Frost. At 75 ? 6 at the lunch break, the college had the upper hand, eventually bowling the Headmasters? XI out for 108. Unfortunately, for the College 1st XI the heavens then opened and the square was awash and unplayable for the rest of the day. Similarly on Saturday 23 Kelly College 1st XI travelled to Queen?s College, Taunton but the game was abandoned due to rain. Queen?s batted first in a 45 over match and struggled to score after some excellent bowling again by Robert Thomas, George Hall, Jack Newton and Freddy Frost, who swung the ball with fantastic control. Queen?s College were under pressure after Thomas?s opening spell, and subsequently lost wickets cheaply. At 92 ? 4 at lunch, Kelly College once again had the upper hand to be deprived of a probable victory twice in a week due to the rain. Queen?s managed 102 ?5 off 34 overs before the game was abandoned.
