AN innovative project to establish a new focus for remembrance in Okehampton is being considered by the town's branch of the Royal British Legion. The project, which is planned to come to fruition during the next four years, coincides with the centenary of the First World War and is seen as an opportunity for the town to acknowledge the occasion and provide a significant and lasting place of remembrance for future generations. The aim is to establish an accessible and visible focal point for those who died in peace and conflict which can be acknowledged every day of the year by anybody at any time. It is envisaged that a new permanent, visible place for reflection and remembrance will provide the town with a central focus into the next century. Seen very much as a community based project that will need the support of the townspeople, the Royal British Legion is seeking the views of the community on a potential new memorial. Allenton Fisher, a spokesman for the Royal British Legion said: 'There is no intention to move the existing Okehampton memorial situated in the parish churchyard, but rather to establish a more visible and central focus of remembrance within the town that will complement the existing memorial. 'We hope that the project will appeal to the people of Okehampton and we are now seeking initial thoughts from all interested parties on the concept. 'It is our intention once initial consultations have been made to hold a competition, open to all, on the design. 'We particular wish to engage with younger generations so that the significance of remembrance is not forgotten in years to come.' The project is being overseen by a small working group that will now start to seek the views of the general public and would welcome any suggestions or comments. A short questionnaire has been developed and can be found at http://www.rblokehampton.org.uk">www.rblokehampton.org.uk or alternatively available at the Museum of Dartmoor Life or Okehampton Post Office.
