TAVISTOCK residents have been offered a unique opportunity to have their names memorialised in a new Community Sensory Garden, planned for the Meadows.

The garden, which is to be a community-wide project, is part of a major partnership initiative including Tavistock Town Council (TTC), Tavistock Lions Club, Tavistock Rotary Club, Roots to Transition and Tavistock Dementia Action Alliance.

A spokesperson for TTC, which currently owns the land, said if it was designed well, the Community Sensory Garden would provide a valuable resource for a range of uses – from education to recreation.

Chairman of the Tavistock Dementia Action Alliance and president of the Rotary Club Tony Parker said: ‘It will be a concentration of different experiences. There will be passive places designed to be calming but appealing to the senses; other areas which will stimulate activity and even those which can be used within therapeutic or educational programmes.’

President of the Lions Club Richard Jones said: ‘The garden will be accessible and enrich the current area of the Meadows with shade, shelter and seating as well as activities such a pentanque (a form of boules) – so it will appeal to a wide range of groups and people in the town.’

Sue Hepworth and Alison Sedgwick from Roots to Transition have been involved in designing the garden which will form an extension of their redevelopment of the rose walk area in the Meadows.

Sue said: ‘This will be an exciting opportunity to demonstrate the therapeutic effects of gardening on all aspects of our community.’

A fundraising campaign is now underway and for £35, members of the public will be able to purchase a brick engraved with a personalised message.

If you would like more information on the garden or would like to sponsor a brick, please call 01822 852777 or visit the Community Sensory Garden stand at the Pannier Market, Tavistock on Friday, April 22.
