WEST Devon people are being offered the chance to have a say in the operation of Devon and Cornwall Police by becoming an independent member of the Police Authority.

Devon and Cornwall Police Authority is a publicly-accountable body, which is seeking five independent members of the public to serve from next April.

It is the police authority?s job to ensure local people have a say in how they are policed and hold the police force to account for the services delivered.

Brian Greenslade, chairman of Devon and Cornwall Police Authority, said independent members of the authority had the chance to make a real difference.

?These are exciting and challenging times. The police service is undergoing major reform and you can play an active part in helping us drive up standards of police performance,? he said.

The police authority is looking for people who have skills and experience in areas such as performance management, IT, finance and community or race relations. The role involves attending meetings of the Police Authority and consultation meetings with the public, and representing the authority in discussions with other interested parties.

Applicants must be over 21, live or work in the Devon and Cornwall area and be able to commit to a minimum of 35 days a year for up to four years.

Devon and Cornwall Police Authority is committed to equal opportunities and wants the authority to reflect the diversity of the local area and is to encourage applications from minority groups.

The closing date for applications is October 28.
