Okehampton Colts 38
Tavistock Colts 7
THE Okes secured an early advantage when centre Carl Poynton broke through midfield following an initial break from Tom McGratton. Fly-half Dennis was on hand for the off load to touch down to score.
From the restart the Okes relaxed and the visitors came back with a determined response that brought pressure within the Okes' 22. After some excellent interplay between forwards and backs, a kick through saw the Tavistock scrum-half win the foot race to secure a converted score.
After this wake-up call the home side started to assert themselves and after several phases of play the ball was spun wide where James Bird showed terrific pace to outstrip the defence for a well finished try. Poynton added a well taken penalty to bring the half-time score to 17-7.
The second half again saw the Okes securing an early advantage after scrum-half Darcy Heard made an excellent break from second phase possession. The ball was kept alive in contact and a pass to Callum Ausden saw the winger exhibit some terrific finishing skills to finish off a good piece of team play.
After a period of mid-field stalemate McGratton brought some authority to proceedings with a great break through a mid-field gap and after some flowing passages of interplay James Bird rounded off a terrific passage of play for his second try.
Soon after, a similar passage of play culminated in Bird completing his hat-trick when he finished off a move that saw the ball going through numerous pairs of hands for the final score of the game.
Poynton and Dennis gave an exemplary display of kicking with all five tries being converted to bring the final score to 38-7 to the home side in a game well refereed by Dan Gorfin.
• This week the Okehampton Colts play Brixham Colts in the Devon Colts Cup.
