AS I sit in my garden enjoying the sunset and the still summer evening air, nursing a well deserved beverage after a busy day, I could not help but notice the varied and different sounds of the local rural mechanical wildlife.

To date this year I have heard at least ten types of lawnmower roaring in nearby gardens, several screaming strimmers, the usual humming hedge trimmer, and last week these were joined by the unmistakable whine of a brace of garden shredders.

The distant screechs of the weekend chainsaw seem to have abated somewhat, perhaps they have migrated and will return in the autumn along with the loud leaf blower.

Interesting as these sounds may be, unfortunately they can be very intrusive for neighbours if all this noisy mechanical garden equipment is used inconsiderately. May I, through your columns, plead for operators to spare a thought for those who might crave a little silence to enjoy the genuine birdsong at the end of the day.
