CHAGFORD Conservation Group turned their hand to helping maintain Stone Lane Gardens earlier this month. The cheerful members of Chagford Conservation Group had agreed to help with some garden maintenance at the five acre woodland and water garden near Chagford. Stone Lane Gardens is an environmental and educational charity, home to important national collections of birch and alder trees, which in summer also features an imaginative and long running sculpture exhibition. The group tackled an overgrown laurel hedge that was causing visibility problems at the roadside entrance. Having made short work of this, they moved on to cut vegetation away from paths and haul out some brambles that were invading a wildflower area. A separate group set about repairing the many wooden bridges that criss-cross the streams. Garden manager Paul Bartlett said that without the help of voluntary groups like Chagford Conservation Group, the charity would struggle to maintain the garden, which is open all year round for the enjoyment of the public.
