A BUMPER bundle of cash grants was announced for West Devon by the Millennium Festival Awards scheme last Friday.

The largest award of £5,000 went to Bridestowe Parish Hall management committee.

The money will be put towards the initial stages of building a new hall on the existing site and will help pay architects' fees and planning application costs.

Laura Leigh, chairperson, said: 'Our hardworking committee derives tremendous encouragement from the National Lottery Board's commitment to enhancing community facilities in a rural area such as this.'

The present timber-built hall was built in the 1920s and is nearing the end of its useful life.

Moretonhampstead Computer Club is celebrating a £3,454 grant — the money will be used to buy extra equipment which will mean more courses can be offered.

The club hopes more young and older people will be able to extend their skills and enjoy a wider range of activities on club nights.

Highampton Area Pre-School Group has been awarded £2,496 to provide NVQ III training for staff and a screen to make a quiet area for children.

A millennium booklet on the history of Beaford is being collated by the village WI group — printing costs can now be met thanks to a £2,400 boost to funds.

Okehampton Scout Group will use their £2,080 grant to buy camping equipment, while Germansweek Parish Hall committee can buy new tables and chairs for the hall, thanks to a £2,056 grant.

Sticklepath Fashion Show received £2,262 which will help with running costs for the four-day event towards the end of August, while Okehampton Columbines Hockey Club is using their £1,091 grant to pay for coaching, equipment and the cost of holding a taster day — the club is aiming to establish a youth team.

Hatherleigh Chatterbox Toddler Group can buy some new toys and equipment with their £1,280 grant — some of the money will also go towards a summer outing.

And Bridestowe, Lydford and Sourton Pre-School Playgroup will also get some new equipment, thanks to their £603 grant.
